A brief history of Hawaiian Hula Dancers

Hula is the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people, a sophisticated art form developed in the islands by the Polynesians who first settled there. In ancient Hawaii, before a written language existed, hula was the primary method of preserving history, genealogy, and mythology. Accompanied by rhythmic chants known as mele, hula dancers used precise hand gestures and hip movements to “sign” the stories of the gods, the beauty of the natural world, and the exploits of great chiefs. Every movement—from the swaying of a palm tree to the cresting of an ocean wave—carries a specific linguistic meaning, making hula a living library of the Hawaiian spirit.

Historically, hula is categorized into two main styles: Hula Kahiko and Hula ʻAuana. Hula Kahiko is the ancient style, performed to rhythmic percussion (like the ipu gourd drum) and intense chanting. It is deeply spiritual and was often performed to honor the volcano goddess, Pele, or other Hawaiian deities. Following the arrival of Western missionaries in the 19th century, hula was briefly suppressed but underwent a massive resurgence under the reign of King David Kalākaua, known as the “Merrie Monarch.” He famously stated, “Hula is the language of the heart, and therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people,” ensuring the tradition would flourish for generations to come.

In the early 20th century, as Hawaii became a global travel destination, Hula ʻAuana (modern hula) evolved. This style is characterized by its grace and the integration of Western-influenced melodic instruments like the ukulele and steel guitar. While Hula ʻAuana is more fluid and less formal than its ancient counterpart, it remains rooted in the same storytelling tradition. Today, when you hire hula dancers for an event in Orlando or anywhere across the U.S., you are witnessing a legacy of resilience and beauty that has survived for centuries, continuing to bridge the gap between the ancient Pacific and the modern world.
